Decorating Your Space

We want you to make your MIT space feel like home. Please follow these guidelines when personalizing your living environment.

Use and Arrange MIT Furniture

Arrange and use MIT-provided furniture within your assigned room. Furniture must stay in its original room, so don’t move common room items into your room or move your room furniture into common areas. Residents are responsible for all furnishings and may be charged for missing furniture or furniture not returned to its original configuration.

Reach out to your House Operations Manager before lofting or bunking your bed, as guidelines vary by building. While lofting or bunking is sometimes permissible, you should remember to disassemble any lofting and return the bed to its original configuration before you move out.

Alterations & Additions

Painting or chalking any permanent wall or ceiling surfaces is prohibited (except in designated mural areas). Additionally, you may not puncture or damage walls or ceilings with screws, nails, pins, hangers, or any hardware. Instead, use command strips, removable putty, painter’s tape, or other damage-free solutions.

Decorations

You are welcome to add photos and posters to your space. For fire safety, combustible materials (fabric, paper, etc.) used as wall or door decorations should not cover more than 40 × 40 inches per wall, and must not cover more than one‑third of the door surface. Following MIT's postering policy, banners or flags may not be displayed in exterior-facing windows or in residential common spaces. Also, please do not cover important building signage, such as fire-safety placards or exit signage.

Live or fresh-cut Christmas trees are not allowed (random to mention, but they’re a fire hazard!)
