Eligibility
Undergraduate students may be eligible to live in designated graduate residence halls (Tang Hall, Sidney-Pacific, and Ashdown House) if they are:
- entering MIT as a married first-year student with their partner
- students with dependents or spouses who will live with them full-time while at MIT
- enrolled in a Master's program with undergraduate status (joint degrees).
Depending on occupancy levels, a limited number of spaces in graduate residences may also be made available to upper-level or nontraditional students interested in a graduate housing experience. Undergraduates can indicate interest through the housing intent process, with priority given to seniors. Class-year exceptions are made for residents of an undergraduate house that is closed for a major capital renewal project.
Undergraduates who opt to live in graduate housing will be billed at the monthly graduate housing rate for their unit type, rather than the term-based undergraduate housing charge. September and May charges are prorated based on undergraduate move-in and move-out dates. Just as in undergraduate housing, all utilities are included. Additionally, there is a separate charge for house taxes, which are determined by the house government.
All students designated as undergraduates living in graduate residences continue to follow undergraduate housing timelines and processes, including the housing intent process. However, the undergraduate spring building switch is unavailable, as graduate housing is intended to be a full academic-year commitment. Undergraduates are also not eligible to participate in graduate building or internal room switches. Students may be eligible to continue living in their graduate assignment over the summer if they register for summer housing. Contact us to learn more.
Undergraduates assigned to graduate buildings will also have their rooms assigned by Housing & Residential Services.
If you are currently an undergraduate holding dual status in a graduate program (e.g., MEng Program), you can:
- choose to remain in undergraduate housing (if you are within your eight consecutive semesters)
- request undergraduate housing through the housing waitlist (if you are past your eight consecutive semesters)
- or participate in self-selection for graduate housing (except the Warehouse).
