About
A Note from Current Residents:
As one of the smallest living groups on campus, we have a laid back, homey culture and a tight-knit family. Don’t speak German? That’s totally fine; while we would love it if you do, most of our members don’t. We have a variety of interests here in German House ranging from baking, Mario Kart, volleyball, hiking, the list goes on!
On any given day, you can find us in the lounge hanging out, psetting, or binging shows. Not feeling social? That’s fine - you’ll have a cozy single or double to yourself if you really need to cram in some work! Our cookcrew system ensures that everyone eats six healthy, homemade meals each week, with each member committing to just two hours of cooking per week! Aside from living and cooking together, we also hold a variety of social events, including fancy dinners for celebrations, rock climbing outings, and mass boba orders.
Dining Info
German House has a cookcrew system. Working in teams of 4-5 residents, each student cooks once a week for a total of 6 meals a week. Besides cookcrew, you can feel free to use all of the German House communal dishes, cookware, and appliances to make your own food. Curious to see what meals are like? Check out our cookcrew website.
Room Assignments
A unique feature of MIT’s residential system is that student Room Assignment Chairs or "RACs" work with Housing & Residential Services and members of their House team to coordinate individual room assignments in each building. Each house approaches room assignments a bit differently (full house action plans can be found here), but all follow the Institute’s nondiscrimination policy and these principles:
- New student preferences will be used to make room assignments.
- Upper-level students will not preference or select students to live on their floors/entry/community.
- First-year students may opt out of exploration and are not required to move.

New House Living Groups
All six physical houses are connected by the "arcade" on the first floor of the building. In addition, houses 1, 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6 are connected diagonally on the second through fifth floors.
The rooms in these six physical houses are divided into nine living groups, which, to make things confusing on purpose, are also called "houses”. New House is split into 9 different living groups: 5 cultural houses and 4 numbered houses. Click to learn more!
